An artificial crown is often the only way in dentistry, when the biggest part of a tooth has been destroyed and the normal chewing function can no longer be achieved even with a dental filling. However, it is required that the root is firmly anchored to the jaw bone. If this is not the case, a dental implant is the most recommendable alternative.

Treatment plan with dental crowns abroad

Before covering the damaged tooth with a crown, the tooth must be drilled so that it receives the appropriate form. For this, local anesthesia is used. During the preparation phase, the tooth must assume a defined almost parallel form, so that crown and tooth can perfectly connect with each other.

Before their use, dental crowns must be prepared. Two appointments in our clinic will be needed: 1. for taking dental impressions and 10-14 days later, a second one for fixing the crown. While the dental laboratory prepares the tooth crown, it is usually accessed a transitional coverage (temporary) that covers the tooth stump. This temporary solution protects the tooth stump from food leftovers, which could cause an infection. Last of the patient’s prepared crown is fitted. The dentist can grind the crown and the tooth easily again when needed. The crown is cemented on the treated tooth stump.

Dental crown types

There is a wide variety of crowns: cast crowns, porcelain crowns, pin crowns, veneered or all-ceramic crowns, among others. The various types of crown can be simultaneously divided into four categories: precious metal crowns, non-precious metal crowns, metal-free crowns and crowns of mixed materials that are usually produced from ceramics and precious metals. In our dental clinic, we only use metal-free restorations. In case of crowns, we always use zirconium crowns (metal-free crowns).

Risks and side effects of dental crowns

The risks of treatments with crowns are very low these days thanks to the latest dental technology available. However, the patient can expect to have certain side effects after treatment. After preparing for a dental crown, pain may occur. However, this stops after a few days. Also, with a certain temperature, sensitivity can occur or an altered sensation may rise while chewing, but quickly regresses after the treatment is completed.
